Louis de Wohl has a series of novels based on the lives of the saints. They’re not the greatest writing ever but I like that they follow a character that is somehow related to the saint and through the character, give you a clearer sense of what the time period was like. Undset has a book about Catherine of Siena. And I just discovered Mark Twain has a book about Joan of Arc, though I haven’t gotten a chance to read it yet.
I recommend the Catechism of the Catholic Church.
